ECRI Director

Prof. Mahmoud Roushdi is the Director of the Environment and Climate Changes Research Institute (ECRI) at Egypt’s National Water Research Center (NWRC). He leads the institute’s strategic research programs and multidisciplinary teams addressing the nexus between climate change, water resources, and environmental sustainability.

His work focuses on assessing climate change impacts on Egypt’s water resources, including climate risk analysis, vulnerability assessment, and the development of evidence-based adaptation strategies to support national water planning and climate resilience. Through this work, he contributes directly to strengthening Egypt’s capacity to respond to climate-driven challenges affecting water systems, agriculture, and ecosystems.

Prof. Roushdi also oversees research on environmental management and policy support, with recognized expertise in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). In addition, he has conducted extensive research on wastewater treatment technologies and sustainable water management, contributing to national efforts to enhance water reuse and infrastructure resilience under climate pressures.

He has supervised numerous MSc and PhD theses, published over 30 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, and participated in several regional and international projects focused on climate change, water resources management, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

ECRI Overview

Environment and Climate changes Research Institute (ECRI) was established in 1994, According to Republican Decree No. 316 of 1994, to perform high level research on the impacts of both environment and climate changes on natural resources, in particular water resources.

Area of Expertise

ECRI have been providing consultancy services for over 30 years, drawing from the expertise of professionals. It offers various services to decision makers and stakeholders in the fields of climate changes and environmental impact assessment science. It provides real time observation network for climate and environmental Indicators. ECRI works for government, privet sector and commercial parties, and carry out studies both on the national, regional and international scales, in addition to local scale studies.
